“Our Story” – from the project start until now and how our evolution went (Business-oriented Presentation)

With the Implementation of the Sarbanes Oxley 404 act we were forced to deliver key performance indices on a regular basis; so we needed a solution that delivers the performance at least of our key systems. As we planned a major technical revision also we investigated in how we can improve our reporting and internal escalations and early warning systems.

We looked into (and partly tested) several alternatives from "Big Brother" over Nagios over "What's up Gold" to HP Openview and found none of them very satisfying (either technically or from a budget perspective).

We found OpenNMS in the "dust circle" of Nagios and even during testing it wowed us. After initial installation and 30 minutes configuration we were able to collect the first data.

I will show the evolutionary process, the setbacks and the success stories and how we use it today; show the business and political benefits we gained; also what we would like to see in future versions and where the weaknesses of OpenNMS are.
